EMMETT GOES BACK TO SCHOOL

Extreme Sports Athlete Tim Emmett Visits Henry Compton’s Sports Day to Launch New Team Jazz Sports Sponsorship

Extreme sports athlete Tim Emmett and New Zealand beach volleyball internationals Anna Scarlet and Susan Blundell visited Henry Compton School’s sports day yesterday to speak to pupils about the benefits of sport, to give out awards to event winners and to launch the new Team Jazz Sports Sponsorship Scheme.

The school which has been on its current site in Kingwood Road, Fulham for 100 years is set to complete another highly successful year with the school looking to build on last year’s ‘Good’ grade in their OFSTED report and the 17% increase seen in A*-C GCSE grades.   A specialist science college, Henry Compton School also has the Lead departments in the borough for art, maths and history but the school is also renowned for its sporting heritage with famous names such as Linford Christie and David Kirton hailing from the school.

With the current negative press surrounding teenagers and the horrific number of teenage deaths in the capital, Headteacher, Dinesh Ramjee, is a firm believer in sport, as a way of channelling teenagers’ energy and skills.

Mr Ramjee comments: “We all feel very strongly about sport having a major role to play in shaping the adults of the future.  We encourage our pupils to get involved as much as possible and this can be seen in the strength of our football, basketball, table tennis, cricket and weight lifting teams.  The school is also recognised by the DSCF for its excellent practice in motivating and mentoring which is another important aspect of helping the kids and teenagers make the right decisions.  Two of our pupils even participated in a discussion with MP Hazel Blears last week, explaining the excellent work being done at the school in these areas.”

He continues: “It is great to have Tim, Anna and Susan down for sports day as these positive role models are very important in reaching kids and exciting them about sport.  Its great that they can talk to our pupils, offer them advice and the Team Jazz Sports Sponsorship gives kids something to set their sights on.”

As well as handing out football and basketballs to event winners and giving a motivational speech, Tim, Anna and Susan were also on hand to give out information on sporting activities taking place in London throughout the summer holidays while keeping an eye out for talent to apply for the new Team Jazz Sports Sponsorship.

The sponsorship set up by Jazz Apples is a unique opportunity open to all ages, backgrounds and sporting disciplines, offering applicants the perfect opportunity to gain additional support to help them in the pursuit of their sporting dreams.  With competing in sport often being a costly business, team members will receive £1000 to help lift some of this financial burden, as well as receiving a publicity campaign with the aim of attracting additional media interest and sponsorship for each team member.  The successful ten will also be taken on a motivational team building trip where they will meet the rest of the team and take part in an adventure activity day with Tim Emmett.

Emmett has vast experience in competing at the highest level and is renowned for his astonishing sporting exploits including four podium positions in the World Ice Climbing Championships and an unforgettable race with Jeremy Clarkson up Verdon Gorge on Top Gear.  As part of his work with Jazz Apples, Tim regularly visits schools, colleges and universities talking about what he does and the benefits of sport, positive thinking, healthy eating and keeping active.

Emmett comments: "Sport is the best way to capture the imagination of kids and teenagers.  Not only do sports instill discipline, teach new skills and offer excitement but they also give youngsters goals and targets to aim for.  We have seen some excellent talent on show today and hopefully we will get some applications for the Team Jazz sponsorship scheme.  We want the team to be an eclectic mix of talented sports people who have a fresh new attitude and strive to be the best.  You never know, hopefully the team will have a future world champion or Olympian one day, maybe even the next Linford Christie."
