OAR INSPIRING HELEN VICTORIOUS AT HENLEY WOMEN'S REGATTA

Congratulations to Team Jazz member Helen Glover who swept/skulled away the competition to win the singles event at this year’s Henley Women’s Regatta.

Working hard throughout the winter Helen focused her training on what she described as the biggest event of the racing season. The regatta which took place on the 18-21st June was a knockout format of head to head boat races along a 1.5km stretch of the Thames culminating in a final showdown between the last two remaining rowers.

On the road to glory Helen (rowing for Minerva Bath) saw off challengers representing Leeds Rowing Club and Oxford Brookes University and in Sunday’s final faced a Canadian rower, Cathy Crawley, who had already beaten one of the tournament favourites. Bursting from the start line, Glover paced ahead for the first two minutes of the six minute race to gain a considerable 3 length lead which she managed to hold on to till the finish, romping home with the trophy.

Fresh off this success her team has qualified for the main Henley Royal Regatta in which they will compete as a four against the international squads of Great Britain, New Zealand, and new kid’s on the dock China whom they meet in their first race. With the Chinese pumping millions into the sport in their quest for Olympic gold Helen faces one of her toughest challenges yet.

We wish her the best of luck, find out how she did in August’s newsletter!
