SHRINK A HEAD FOR HALLOWEEN



Put that machete away silly, we mean shrunken apple heads! Scare your friends and family with these fiendish decorations from the darkest Amazon.

Here is what you'll need for the basic shrunken head:

• Jazz apples
• Peeler
• Paring knife
• Toothpicks
• 1 cup lemon juice
• 1 tbsp. salt
• Baking rack

Instructions

• Peel the apples
 
• Mix lemon juice and salt together in a large bowl. Soak each apple in the mixture for a minute or so. This will help preserve the apples and speed up the drying process. 

• Give your apple human form, carving it in the likeness of your best mate, favourite teacher, or boss, use a tooth pick for the finer points. Bear in mind that the head will shrink by half so exaggerate features.  

• After you've finished carving the head return the apple to the lemon juice and salt mixture to cover newly exposed areas.
 
• It’s shrink time - There are a few ways to do this. For best results place them on a baking rack in a warm dry area turning them over every few days (airing cupboards are ideal). They'll have shrunk in a week. If you’re pressed for time you can dry them in an oven in about a day at the lowest temperature setting.

• Suspend the heads from the ceilings with string or scare visitors with heads on stakes outside your front door. The apple will be perfectly edible too.

Variations

• If you really want to get carried away use a needle and thread to sew the lips of your apple shut like real shrunken heads
• Add hair from an old wig or cotton wool to make your head look more authentic
• Use grains of rice for teeth
• Add whole cloves for eyes
• Colour your apple head with food coloring
